The Book Life

A life is like a book. Are we hardcovers, paperbacks, or eBooks?

Speaking for myself, I’d rather be a hardcover.

The dust jacket has a splash of color on the front to draw the eye, perhaps in anticipation of our birth. There is also the back cover. Maybe there is a photograph of us and some words of praise? I think we know what that is analogous to. There is the inside flap, which tells us what to expect, and the back flap to tell us how it went. The really good part is between the covers—where the story lies.

How good a story, you might ask? You will be astonished. Anything can happen there.

One of the reasons I read is to discover the worlds of others. I’ve read some that are rather grim. I’ve also read some that are amazing. Satiated, I then get back to work. The really wonderful part about being an author is that I can dictate how it goes between my covers.

Then again maybe everybody can. We are the authors of our lives, yes?
