In an article called “So, You Want to Change the World?“, I discussed homeostasis, and the fact that change moves in jerky, rather than smooth, increments. Often one plateaus at a certain level and remains there for an extended period. If one continues along the path of creating change, a new upswing will develop eventually, but what does one do in the meantime? There is only one remedy: keep showing up.
Success requires persistence. No matter the obstacles, the barriers, the distractions or the difficulties, all of them will melt before this one principle. Keep showing up, and all will end well. Fail to do so, and all the previous progress will be for nothing. Change is never easy. Homeostasis makes it that way. It’s easy to think it’s you. It’s not. It’s the way the universe works. Sometimes one has to be reminded of this fact as one searches for the reasons, often wrongly assigned, as to why change is not happening.
